A Tale of Two Babies

A couple weeks ago, I took in Baby Raptor because he was losing weight and not eating on his own. I've been force feeding him almost everyday since then. Luckily, he learned to drink on his own and some days I can get him to eat a worm or two. Plus, most days, he loves to eat bits of greens. He was the first time pet of a cute family near me and was way more sickly than they could handle.

A few days after taking Raptor, I took their second baby beardie, Delta, in because he had stopped eating and drinking too. Both babies came from the same pet store, both are definitely "Failing to Thrive." Delta will drink on his own, but has refused to eat bugs or greens for a week now.

Raptor has been with me for 3 weeks and is still stuck at 5 grams. He is THREE months old and weighs 5 grams! Delta weighs 11 grams and isn't putting on weight either. They get Carnivore Critical Care mixed with a vitamin supplement almost daily and they are not gaining weight. They poop normally and run as fast as they can away from me, but they are not gaining weight.

Poor Raptor sits in his tank like this almost all day. Eyes closed, head up. Thankfully, Delta is a little bit more active.

It's a waiting game. You keep doing what you are doing and wait for them to turn a corner and go up or down. They are either going to start thriving and growing or they will sicken and die. :( It's a crappy waiting game-- especially when you have a cute family waiting for their babies to come back home. Thankfully, 4 years of rescue has perfected my art of force feeding babies-- the right amount of mix put into a 1 cc/mL syringe with the tip of a Tom Cat catheter on the top to make a small enough tube to put in a tiny mouth.

I'm seeing and reading about a LOT of babies being sent to the national chain pet stores here in America that have this same problem-- Failure to Thrive. It must be a genetic component or something. My guess is sloppy husbandry and sloppy breeding practices are creating inferior, genetically messed up babies. :( Poor things.

For now I will keep on keeping on as I help these two. I'm still force feeding Kiwi, the chameleon, and there's not much difference between force feeding two or three or four.

On a brighter note, this fatty girl, Gen, who tipped the scales last week at 758 grams, was a "Failure to Thrive" baby who was force fed twice a day for THREE months! She was 15 grams forever! She finally got over it. :) There is hope for Delta & Raptor, but it's a long & hard process.

Gen at the Vet

I took Gen, my only female beardie, in today to make sure she was healthy and didn't have any eggs. She was mellow the whole time from the ride there to the exam to driving home. She just sat in her box and watched everything.

I've been regulating Gen's diet since last September to help her lose weight. Apparently, it didn't work because she has put on 100 grams since then! Whoops! She was 652 grams on 9/28/16; she was 758 grams today. The vet asked "How's her activity level?" Um, she's a slug. "How's her appetite?" She goes crazy when she sees food.

Time to break out the beardie treadmill and play "Eye of the Tiger" for her on my iPod! ;)

Gen is a BIG girl. Which is hard to believe because her rescuer (a good friend of mine) force fed her as a baby for the first 3 months of her life. It took a lot of convincing & stress & coaxing to get Gen to live. The vet was surprised to hear that since she obviously is very healthy now.

You can see how long Gen is so she's not morbidly obese or anything. She's just a big girl! And there are no eggs! Dr Folland thought at first he felt an egg, but it was merely a fat pad that was floating in her belly. She has quite a few fat pads. :)

One of the reasons I had Gen checked today is that I have someone coming to meet her tonight. With her being my only female, I am very protective of her at my house. Her presence makes all my male beardies go CRAZY! And the presence of hormonal males will make her more likely to lay eggs. So I don't let her out much. If she is the only beardie and gets a ton of attention, I think she'll slim down some and be more happy. My house is good, but I'm not so arrogant that I think my house is the ONLY good one. Gen is a great beardie and I adore her, but I realize she's one of 10 here (3 of which require daily force feedings) and there's not a lot of time & attention for her.

Gorgeous, huh? Not too bad for a "Failure to Thrive" beardie who has asymptomatic adenovirus too.

Reptile Roll Call for January 5, 2017

Here's most of my reptile zoo (minus the 3 ball pythons who didn't want to leave their hides to have their pictures taken; I have Lucy, Sunny, & Bones). Also, Gumby, the MBD leopard gecko didn't want to come out either.

Neville, the latest addition

Noel, who is looking sickly this morning

Smaug, my big boy who is looking for a home as the ONLY beardie

Tiger, who has been wheezing again :(

And last, but not least, Lady Squinty Dink the Dainty Skink of bluTonguesville!

Couldn't get the lighting right for a good pic

Gen-- then & now

Last week--

Kudos to Kaitlund who force fed her for months and kept her alive. This little baby seemed determined to die. Now she's a gorgeous & spoiled thing.

Dress up Time! Etsy Costume Upgrades

Gen was nice and played dress ups with me and some of my improved costumes.

She said "No!!!" to the sleeves. Ah well. At least I got 2 pics.

The Yoda costume has a better light saber and belt.

The Luke costume has darker stitching, a great new utility belt, and a new light saber.

The angel wings have gold stitching.

And the Cupid wings are cuter with a better bow & arrow.
